Let me start this by saying I use Facebook and other social media networks as a main form of communication for a lot of people. I use Facebook messenger on my phone almost as much as actual texting, and I do it with a smile. I love the ease of communication that something like Facebook, Twitter or even Google + offers.

One thing I wouldn't do is tell someone horrible news via facebook, you know like maybe a loved one passed away. Unfortunately the Clayton County Police Department in Georgia doesn't agree with me.

"Society has accepted social media as a major form of communication, and so have I," a statement prepared by a detective in the Clayton County Police Department reads. Word got out that his department used Facebook to notify a woman of her son's death.
The statement, provided to TODAY, explains that "several traditional attempts" were made to notify the family of 30-year-old Ricky Lamb after the man died. "We make every possible attempt to apply best practices when handling these sensitive matters," the statement emphasizes. After the traditional notification attempts failed, officers took to Facebook, sending the deceased's mother a private message via the social network.
As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reports, the mother, Anna Lamb-Creasey, did not see the heartbreaking message until almost a month later. Due to the way Facebook handles messages from individuals with whom a user isn't "friends," the correspondence was buried in a folder labeled "Other." It never appeared in Lamb-Creasey's regular inbox. Additionally, Lamb-Creasey told the AJC, the message came from an account belonging to a "Misty Hancock" which had "the profile picture of Atlanta rapper TI." Both Lamb-Creasey and her daughter assumed that the message was fake when they saw it.
But as time passed and Lamb appeared to be missing, Lamb-Creasey's daughter finally called the phone number listed on the strange Facebook profile "and an officer gave her the bad news."
TODAY has made multiple attempts to reach Lamb-Creasey for comment, but we have not heard back. She did tell the AJC that she was both furious that officers didn't manage to reach her via traditional means, and confused about the Facebook account used to contact her.
"People need to know that it's a police department trying to contact them. If you just have a picture of a rapper TI no one's gonna take that serious," Melissa Wilson, a friend of Lamb-Creasey, pointed out to the AJC.
"In an effort to prevent this from occurring again, immediate changes are being made," the Clayton County Police Department statement explains. For starters, the department will launch an official Facebook page.
"This site will serve as another format to relay current events and notifications to the community that we serve," the statement adds. "We will continue the traditional methods of personal face to face contact as we integrate this new tool of social media." Additionally, a "thorough review" of the Ricky Lamb death notification will be conducted.

Tweet up from the meteor strike

At times in my life I feel like I can get obsessed with space. So when a meteor hit Russia and it didn't wipe out the globe, I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I would like to say thanks to CNN for putting this together.

The fun of promised sharing on Facebook

First this morning I saw this picture from Bill Gates

Next came this one in response from a friend and a local guy who is not a multibillionaire.

First, Bill I want that in cash please, unmarked bills preferably, and (person I will leave nameless just in case) I'm sure my wife would love to take you shopping. If a billion people can watch "Gangnam Style" then you can surely get a bill....oh tril....oh wait what number is that?

More bands or entertainers should be like Demon Hunter

Demon Hunter is a christian metal band and a band that I have been a fan of since their first record came out in 2002. Since then I have come to have a lot of respect for this band. They write incredible songs both lyrically and musically and they do it all their way. They don't tour that often, but still manage to release a new album every few years.

In their documentary 45 Days they highlight a fan who happens to be a member of the U.S. Military. They like so many other hard rock and metal bands do what they can to support our troops. I know it's something that helps me proudly say I'm a fan of this band.

In an article in Esquire Magazine about the Navy Seal team that took out Bin Laden their name came up. The article has interviews with some of the team members including the shooter. Well after Metallica had come out and said they didn't want their music associated with torture or it being used to strike fear into the opponent, a lot of troops starting using or listening to Demon Hunter. This Navy Seal team specifically even had Demon Hunter patches on their uniforms.

So what does a christian metal band say about that? This is from their facebook page:
"As you can imagine, our inboxes and phones (and those of our representatives) have been flooded with messages asking us how we feel about the Esquire article on the raid that brought Osama Bin Laden to justice that began circulating yesterday. Specifically, the person identified in the story as "The Shooter" said that Seal Team 6 wore the Demon Hunter emblem on their uniforms and "I wore it when I blasted Bin Laden."

Over the years, we have been overwhelmed by the personal (and unofficial) emails and letters we've received from members of the US military. We have been humbled and honored by the troops who've told us our music has offered them some comfort while overseas, while missing loved ones, while doing what they do best in order to keep America safe and protect the freedoms we enjoy. We've met many servicemen and women at our shows and they've shared their stories with us in person, as well. We wrote "The Soldier's Song" back in 2005 to pay tribute to these folks who've reached out to us. We included one such veteran among the Demon Hunter fans we profiled in our documentary film, 45 Days.

We have seen our symbol, a demon skull with a bullet hole in its forehead, tattooed on fans around the world. We've seen it made into sculptures, painted onto motorcycles, even spray-painted onto tanks and military planes. We often post these pictures on our Facebook page when we receive them. One such email, a few years ago, came from a special operations team who had crafted homemade Demon Hunter patches and put them on their uniforms. They asked us if it was OK if they did this and we of course told them "YES" because we are unapologetic supporters of our troops. In the last 24 hours, we have come to believe this team who contacted us a few years ago must have been Seal Team 6.
As for the talk about enhanced interrogation techniques that has sprung up in the media in the last 24 hours surrounding this story, we feel that it is an unnecessary distraction. It's been widely reported for years that heavy metal music has sometimes been used in these situations. We have no specific knowledge of our music being used for this, nor have we ever volunteered it to be used as such, nor are we commenting on it beyond that. The debate about enhanced interrogation techniques is for politicians, military intelligence, pundits and others of the like to have.

The members of Seal Team 6 and The Shooter are American heroes who deserve our support. We were among the Americans and people around the world abroad who supported the bringing to justice of one of the biggest mass murderers in history, who planned and executed some of the most horrific acts imaginable. All of the military who risk their lives to protect our freedoms earn our respect each and every single day. We are honored, humbled and blessed that Demon Hunter was of any support or comfort to Seal Team 6 or anyone in the US military at any time."

Well said, and I commend this band.

Soundgarden set list and recap

I've been meaning to post this since the weekend, and haven't gotten around to it, but my buddy ended grabbing a copy of the Soundgarden set list from their show at The Rave in Milwaukee on Friday Feb. 1st. A show that I also attended and was amazing.
This was by far one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Now I grew up listening to Soundgarden and they were easily one of my favorite non metal bands in that era. When they broke up in the late 90's I thought alright it's over I'll never get to see that band live. I'm glad I was wrong, from the moment they took the stage with "Been Away too Long" to the encore it was a night to be remembered.

Keep in mind that there was no opening band, no huge stage show, no crazy antics, just four guys on the stage rocking for 2 and a half hours with no break. I think there is a lesson to be learned from other bands.
